One Room Challenge - Week Five

Updated: Nov 25, 2019

Hey friends! The clock is ticking with just one week to go until the final reveal for the One Room Challenge. I can't wait to show you everything next week when I will have my post up by Thursday morning, May 9!

See my previous weeks' posts here: Week One | Week Two | Week Three | Week Four

PROGRESS THIS PAST WEEK - BASEBOARDS AND TRIM

We completed quite a bit this week, primarily the baseboards, plus door and window trim.

The photo on the (above) left is before the new baseboards and the photo on the (above) right has the baseboards and trim installed.

It is amazing how much of a difference a seemingly simple thing of completing that type of detail piece completes the room and changes it from so-so to great.

One thing to note is that I have never done a lot of finish carpentry as in installing baseboards and using the miter saw to cut 45 degree angles. It was a lot of work, getting down on the floor and up again. I painted the baseboards and trim before installing them, but I still had to go back and fill all the nail holes with wood filler and do a bit of touch-up painting.

This is one of those tasks where it may have been a better use of my time to just hire a carpenter who could have installed all the trim in far fewer hours than me!

Between painting the ceilings and walls a couple weeks back, doing the flooring installation and now the trim, I know absolutely every inch of this room by now!

Another detail that makes a notable difference is changing the floor register. The original one was white and was scuffed up and tired looking. It was really simple measure the opening for the the floor duct and the visit our local home improvement store for the best color and style to work with our new LVP (luxury vinyl plank) floors.

MORE PROGRESS - SURPRISE! - A FEATURE WALL

Yes, this is a surprise thrown in this week. We have know for a couple of weeks that we were going install this wood slat feature, but we were working out the installation details before we wanted to show it.

I think it is a simple, but dynamic wall treatment that frames the wall mural adeptly! I will have more overall photo views for the reveal, but here are some process images to give you an idea of where we are going with it.

We found some finished pine stock that are 1-1/2" square by 8' in length. I wanted the color to remain natural, but also wanted the wood to be sealed, so I chose a paste wax that is applied with a clean cloth, then 20 minutes later is buffed and finished.

It took us the entire weekend to get this project finished, but glad we persevered with our intention!

FLASHBACK TO FOUR WEEKS AGO - OFFICE BEFORE

WHERE WE ARE TODAY

WHERE WE WILL (HOPEFULLY) LAND FOR THE REVEAL

ONE WEEK TO GO!

With only one week to go, it is a relief to have the last few items arrive. Having things ready, like the area rug and even the wastebasket and desk lamp, make it begin to feel like the project is coming to completion!

WHAT WE'LL BE DOING THIS WEEK

  • installing and securing the wall shelving

  • hanging the curtain rod and draperies

  • carpet pad and area rug

  • finish gathering/acquiring accessories for desk and shelves

  • style up the room

  • photograph the completed space

  • a million other things I will think of when I try to sleep each night!

Thanks for taking the time to read I blog post - I REALLY appreciate it!
