2018 ONE ROOM CHALLENGE - WEEK 1

Updated: Nov 25, 2019

One Room Challenge - Guest Participant

Today, I am jumping in to a new challenge...the One Room Challenge! If you have never heard of the one One Room Challenge (ORC) before, there are 20 featured participants and others can join in as guest participants, like me! The objective is to create a community that encourages one another as we design and redo a complete room over a designated six week period.

Ever since meeting Linda, the organizer, at a Design Bloggers Conference in 2016, I have thought about joining in on this twice-yearly event, but the timing never was quite right. This time I just decided I was going to do it and here we are!

For the duration of the challenge, I will be posting each Thursday, so you can follow along with my process and progress.

Some of you know that I have been planning a complete renovation of my powder bath and that is the project I am featuring for the ORC!

CURRENT CONDITION OF OUR POWDER ROOM

As you can see this powder room is a shade of pale green and was decorated in the early 2000s. It has served my family well, for many years, but it is definitely time for a renovation! Four kids sure takes a toll on a bathroom.

Powder Bath BEFORE

MY POWDER ROOM PLAN

  • I will be keeping the wood floors. They are solid wood and flow into the adjacent hallway, entry, and kitchen

  • keep existing toilet for now (may replace in the future)

  • paint existing vanity a deep teal

  • replace existing tile countertop with quartz (in white with light marble veining) and install a new porcelain undermount sink

  • add wallpaper with deep, rich colors with a tropical vibe

  • frame the wallpaper with moulding painted the same teal as the vanity

  • add contrast to the teal with fixtures and hardware in matte or antique brass

  • add art and accessories to add some whimsy to the space

  • bring in warm wood with either a bench or small storage cabinet

INSPIRATION

I gravitate towards flowers and plants. Palm leaves in various hues of green, orchids in vibrant pinks, along with other flowers are a great palette to bring in to a windowless powder room, especially for a garden lover. These bits of nature make me happy!

INSPIRATION

I just love the image above with the foliage in the wallpaper combined with the teal and warm woods. It is inviting and comfortable.

INSPIRATION

This vanity is a rich and vibrant color - teal is one of my favorite colors. I also like the combination of the matte brass, black and white.

The inspiration images I have shared vary from one being full of detail and in contrast, the other being somewhat simple. I think my space will land somewhere in the middle, which tends to be more my style.

So now you know what I am up to. I hope you will check out the talent of those 20 featured and the numerous guest participants of the One Room Challenge!
